Drawing on Israel approaching battle in Deuteronomy 20, the sermon remembers a people who had no military strength of their own and whose decisive resource was the presence of God. Fear can warn and protect, but it must not be allowed to rule the heart when the Lord has promised to go with his people. Jesus is now the high priest who speaks truth and the victorious commander who fights on their behalf. Salvation establishes in the spirit that Jesus is Lord, but discipleship carries his lordship into the heart, mind, and physical choices. There, battles continue over identity, approval, anxiety, possessions, ambition, lust, time, and the difference between temporary priorities and eternal fruit. God invites his people to bring even these small inner conflicts to him. They still participate with humility, obedience, courage, and strength, but victory and transformation come from Jesus, who has already defeated sin, death, and the enemy.
