London Paris New York: A Romantic Comedy Film

London Paris New York, also known by the initialism LPNY, is a 2012 Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy film written and directed by Anu Menon, with Ali Zafar and Aditi Rao Hydari in the lead roles. The film follows the journey of love of Nikhil and Lalitha, two completely different individuals who are drawn to each other in spite of their differences or perhaps because of it. The film is set in three chapters and each chapter is shot in a different city - London, Paris, and New York - for a night each over eight years. The film is a coming of age love story that mirrors three states of love and brings back the wit into Bollywood's romantic comedies.

Plot Summary

The movie starts with Nikhil Chopra being interviewed by a reporter in New York asking him about his newly directed movie and why he chose a serious subject. He replies saying that he was asked by someone to be true to yourself and this movie shows the biggest truth about him. He then receives a message and rushes outside to catch a cab.

The movie then goes back to eight years ago, when Nikhil meets Lalitha at the London airport. They are both on their way to New York but their flight gets delayed due to bad weather. They decide to hang out together for the night and explore London. They have fun and share their dreams and aspirations. Nikhil is a rich kid from Mumbai who wants to study film making in London on his dad's money. Lalitha is a middle class girl from Chembur who wants to study politics in New York on a full scholarship. They realize that they are completely opposite but also feel a connection.

The next morning, they part ways at the airport with a promise to meet again after four years in Paris. Four years later, Nikhil is in Paris for his film festival and Lalitha is there for her student exchange program. They meet again and spend another night together. However, things have changed between them. Nikhil has become more cynical and disillusioned with his career and life. Lalitha has become more confident and ambitious with her studies and activism. They argue and disagree on many things but also rediscover their attraction.

The next morning, they part ways again with a promise to meet after another four years in New York. Four years later, Nikhil is in New York for his movie premiere and Lalitha is there for her job interview. They meet again and spend their final night together. They have both matured and grown as individuals but also face some challenges in their relationship. Nikhil has become more successful and famous but also lonely and unhappy. The movie ends with Nikhil arriving at Lalitha's apartment in New York and proposing to her with a ring. She accepts and they hug each other. The reporter who interviewed Nikhil earlier calls him and asks him if he is happy now. He says yes and hangs up the phone.
